The heroines of Tamora Pierce's novels are often helped through their tribulations by animal companions who have unique personalities or abilities. As well as those domestic animals with special abilities, there are also Immortals such as Spidrens, Stormwings and Griffins.

Changing Behaviour

Due to the presence of wild magic in Tortall (especially that of Veralidaine Sarrasri), there has been a notable change in the behaviour of animals; wild and domesticated. The most drastic changes have occurred relative to their proximity with the Royal Palace in Corus. Humans have commented on several occasions on the apparent "intelligence" of animals, and are learning to use this to their advantage. For example, Keladry's sparrows lead the King's Own to a nest of spidrens.
