Athenaeum, also Athenæum or Atheneum, is used in the names of institutions or periodicals for literary, scientific, or artistic study. The book publisher founded by Alfred A. Kopf, Jr. in 1959 was named Atheneum Books. In its early days mostly adult novels were published there. In 2000 Atheneum Books became part of Simon & Schuster, where it's now a children's book imprint of the company.
The Song of the Lioness and The Immortals quartets were both first published in hardcover by Atheneum Books.
