Awochu was a wealthy man from the Southern Lands. He was the son of a powerful chief, although not Chief Rusom, the leader of all the area surrounding Nawolu. Awochu became enamored with Iyaka, the elder sister of Kylaia al Jmaa. He kissed her brazenly and promised to marry her, but later he claimed that she had magicked him into accepting her. He had the support of members of other tribes.
Kylaia, angered, challenged Awochu to unarmed combat. She won using the martial arts skills she learned from watching animals fight in the wild.

Awochu only appears as the main antagonist in the short story, Student of Ostriches.
