A crescent is a low value Emelanese Coin. They come in both copper and silver and are sometimes nicknamed "creses".[1] Three hundred silver crescents are equal to a Gold maja and a gold astrel, which means 50 silver crescents equals one gold astrel.[2] There is also an island named after the coin, or the coin named after the island.

Examples[]

A child bought a cloak-pin for two silver crescents (Briar tells him he overpaid for it).[3]

In Sandry's Book, Sandry is able to buy a painted wooden drop spindle for less than four copper crescents.[4] Daja, Sandry, Briar and Tris each spend a copper crescent on sweets.

In Daja's Book it is revealed that three hundred silver crescents is enough for a dowry.[2]

In Briar's Book, a sky blue cloth hat with a peacock feather is worth three silver crescents.[5] Workers, including Briar, easily place two or three copper crescent bets on how quick Crane will kick out sloppy attendants.[1]

In Magic Steps, Osa's father promises to pay Pasco a silver crescent to dance a luck dance for his fishing boat.[6] When it works, he pays him 5 instead.
