The Black God is a god worshipped in Tortall, as well as the other Eastern and Southern Lands. He is the God of Death, normally depicted as hooded and robed in black and ruler of the Peaceful Realms, where souls go to rest after death.^[1] It is his job to escort people to the realms of the dead. Pigeons are his servants, transporting the ghosts of the dead to the Peaceful Realms, or carrying them until they are ready to move on.

Rebakah Cooper, who the God himself acknowledges as one of his own, suspects that the Black God claims not only pigeons in the world of the living, but also other things of the air, like dust spinners.^[2] He is well known to be the most merciful of the gods, who forgives and loves even the worst offenders.

The Black God's priests are adressed as "Friend," and wear black robes and a black veil.^[3].

Committing suicide was called the Black God's Option around the middle of the third century of the Human Era.
