The Citadel is located in Summersea, the capital of Emelan. It is on the coast.
It is a fortified castle, and can withstand many sorts of attacks—especially those coming from the sea. This was especially important for many years, as pirates often attacked the city, looking for wealth. The Citadel has an inner keep that is completely magically and physically warded against intruders.
As the Citadel is one of the oldest places in the city, the layers of spells on the more ancient parts are very powerful. Even with unmagic, the Dihanur murders found it difficult to penetrate the keep.
The Citadel is where the Duke or Duchess of Emelan holds their court. When Vedris fer Toren's wife died, he stopped hosting noble families, events, and an actual court, leaving entertaining to his nobles on their own lands. This contrasts largely with the imperial court of Namorn, which is in session all year long to discourage rebellion.
Vedris's heart attack in 1039 KF forced Sandrilene fa Toren to move there from Discipline in Winding Circle temple. Sandry became the female head of household, and took over a large amount of political and economic matters. She oversaw a lot of the work in the Citadel, and by 1043 KF, Erdogun fer Baigh mostly goes to her for her signature as opposed to Vedris.
