|Tortallan Universe character|
Gissa of Rachne (pronounced GISS-ah of RAK-nee) was a powerful mage who studied at the University of Carthak with Numair Salmalín and Tristan Staghorn. She was employed by Ozorne Tasikhe, the Emperor Mage of Carthak. Although her nationality is unknown, it is assumed that she is Carthaki.
Treasonous plot, Dunlath
Gissa was brought to Dunlath by Tristan Staghorn to aid the rebellion under King Jonathan and Queen Thayet of Tortall. Gissa helped Tristan, a prominent war mage, brew Bloodrain, a substance that caused extreme pain to whatever it touched. Consuming it would mean death. Gissa and Alamid Mokhlos were the two mages who helped Tristan in his efforts.
When Numair Salmalín and Veralidaine Sarrasri were sent to investigate the missing Crown agents who disappeared in Dunlath and surrounding areas. Gissa feigned being glad to see Numair again, and it is presumed that they were friends in university before Numair's falling out with Emperor Ozorne. Both Gissa and Alamid were under the guise of traveling mages, on their way to the City of the Gods and just stopping for a brief time in Dunlath. Gissa did explain their unwillingness to depart by stating that the hospitality that Lady Yolane and Lord Belden showed them was absolutely divine.
During the disseminating of the Bloodrain that she and Tristan had brewed in order to poison the Crown agents who came to investigate, some of it got on her hand and she was forced to chop it off due to the pain and the spreading of the poison. She was arrested for high treason.
Gissa is described as being dark and striking. Her Common was heavily accented and it is unknown where exactly she comes from, although it is presumed to be Carthak.
Personality and traits
Gissa technically was not committing treason, due to the fact that she was not Tortallan nor affiliated with it. She remained loyal to Emperor Ozorne's plot, although she did not have a problem with poisoning many people in order to get the job done.
Gissa only appears as one of the antagonists in Wolf-Speaker.
