Template:Provost's Guard Isman Qais (pronounced iz-MAHN), also called Captain Qais, serves in the Provost's Guard of Summersea in Emelan as a respected Captain. He comes from a family of harriers and is very good at his work. He is the son of Abbas Qais, the head of the Qais family, and the brother to Zahra Acalon. Thus he is the maternal uncle to Pasco Acalon.
Biography
Early life
As he was reared in a Harrier family, it was likely that he was expected to go into harrier work from birth. He became a very respected member of the Guard, like most of his family. He regards Harrier work to be extremely respectable.

Isman was first introduced after the brutal murder of Jamar Rokat. He sent a messenger at full gallop to find the Duke, who was at that moment talking with Pasco Acalon, Isman's nephew, and Sandrilene fa Toren. Pasco was alarmed and confused that his uncle, who was a hard man who was rarely put off his stride, would even send a messenger. Pasco internally described his uncle as a man who, even if a tidal wave was riding down on him and his men, would only blink and calmly order his men to find boats. Sandry was very worried about allowing her great-uncle to go to Rokat House, especially so soon after his heart attack. She had a duty to attend to with Pasco, and quickly made him promise something before going after the Duke.
Captain Qais was at first very hesitant about allowing a lady of fourteen to see the murder site. She was very firm, though, and said she needed to look after her uncle, who needed reminding that he couldn't overdo. When it came to the murder site itself, the harriers were very confused with how the murderers even got in to kill Jamar Rokat, as the man used protective magics. Sandry explained that the spells would have remained intact until his death, even if he used a magical key, the alarm spells still would have kept out an intruder. Captain Qais explained that the explanation she gave didn't make sense.
Personality and traits
His nephew Pasco describes him as incredibly unflappable, someone who would only order boats calmly when a tidal wave was bearing down on him and his people. It would take a lot to scare or frighten Isman Qais.
Appearances
He only appears as a minor character in Magic Steps.
