Jakuben fer Pennun, called Jak, is one of the young men chosen by Empress Berenene to court Sandry in the Will of the Empress. He is described as "Big, broad-shouldered, with hair of a crow's-wing black and bright chestnut eyes, he was delightfully handsome, with an infectious smile." On their introduction it is revealed that he is a neighbor to Sandry's Namorn lands. Jak attempts to flirt with Sandry by flattering her which she dislikes and tells him not to do it again. He proves to be a good friend and later presses Sandry to not judge all Namornese men by Fin's actions after the kidnap attempt.
