Jakuben fer Pennun, or Jak, is a Namornese nobleman. He is a member of Empress Berenene's imperial court, and one of the empress's favorites. His family owns lands near Clehamat Landreg.[1]

Biography[]

Early life[]

His mother's best friend killed herself rather than stay with the man who kidnapped her. From an early age, his mother made him promise never to insult a good woman that way and to protect any women in his care from predators who would use the bride kidnapping custom to force a woman into an unwanted marriage. Jak grew to hate the custom.[2]

Member of the imperial court[]

He joined Empress Berenene's court, and grew to be one of her favorites. Empress Berenene realized that he was very good in dealing with some of the older women of the court due to his flirtatious, joking, and kind personality.

In preparation for Sandrilene fa Toren's visit to Namorn, Empress Berenene selected him and Finlach fer Hurich to woo Sandry and to convince her to remain in Namorn and marry one of them. Jak tried to use flattery on Sandry to get her to like him, but she informed him that she didn't like it, and told him not to try it again. This was in front of the entirety of the Imperial Court.

Jak and Fin hung onto Sandry as best they could. Sandry was soon introduced to his more joking personality, after she told him she didn't care for hunting after pretending to listening to Jak's long animated speech about it. He informed her that he asked for her only to make him miserable. At first, though, Jak was not interested in flirting nor paying attention to Sandry without the empress watching, and did not heed her while the empress was taking Briar Moss for a tour of her greenhouses.

He, along with Fin, Rizuka fa Dalach, and Caidlene fa Sarajane, went along with Sandry, her foster siblings and Saghad Ambros to see Landreg. Jak, Sandry, and Fin began to act more like friends without the watchful gaze of the empress.

After disgraced and impoverished noblemen Dymytur fer Holm and Yeskoy fer Haugh attempted to kidnap Sandry and force her into a marriage contract, Jak offered her his friendship. Like so many others, he was under the impression that Sandry fancied Briar Moss, her foster-brother, but she laughed it off and he was convinced that she found the idea grotesque.

Later in Dancruan at the Imperial Palace, after Sandry escaped her would-be kidnapper Fin and decided to return to Emelan, Jak broke into her townhouse by force. This angered Sandry, as she assumed that Jak had come to kidnap her and force her into a marriage himself. He explained that his mother had forbidden him from kidnapping a woman for good reason, and also that he felt that she was blaming the actions of a few on all, and that she had not given Namorn a good chance. He also mentioned that he was in disgrace with the empress, and Briar assumed it was because Jak was supposed to nab Sandry if she said no to a proper proposal.

Jak and Sandry left each other on good terms.

Physical description[]

He is big, broad-shouldered, black of hair, with bright chestnut eyes. He is incredibly handsome.[1]

Personality and traits[]

A few members of the imperial court, such as Pershan fer Roth described Jak as brainless but easygoing. It is revealed later that this is just a facade, and that Jak is actually quite witty, loyal, and kind.

Appearances[]

Jak only appears in The Will of the Empress so far.
