Jumshida Dawnspeaker (pronounced joom-SHEE-dah) is an inhabitant and citizen of the city of Tharios. She is an important academic mage in the city, holding the ranks of First Scholar of Mages' Hall, and Second Scholar of Heskalifos. She lives in an upper class district of the city, and is quite wealthy in her own right.
Dawnspeaker was perhaps born into one of the higher castes of the city, and she is certainly not a prathmuni. Her parents were probably very wealthy. She was probably sent to one of the best universities in Tharios, where she now enjoys a very high position.
The Events of 1039
In 1039 KF, Dhasku Dawnspeaker hosts the great-mage Niklaren Goldeye and his student, Trisana Chandler - the young weather-mage, during their stay in the city. She and Niko are coworkers, and are collaborating with other mages in Tharios to write a book on all sight-magics. As Niko is one of the great seeing-mages ever known, his contributions are much needed for the book.
When Niko takes Kethlun Warder back to Dawnspeaker's home as he is a lightning-mage, she listens and urges Keth to stay with them, as she was quite shocked when she discovered that Keth lived in Khapik with yaskedasi. He accepts, as he discovers that Dawnspeaker would not hear of him returning to his old lodgings for the moment. Then, she accompanies Niko to confer with other mages about their book.
She presumably hears that Keth has been arrested from Niko, and that Tris had accompanied him to the Fifth District arurimat with Dhaskoi Demakos Nomasdina. When she and Niko arrive, she is quite regally angry, and tells the captain at Fifth District that it was good that Keth hadn't been tortured, or else there would be consequences. She questions Keth, while Niko performs the truth spells, proving the man innocent. They take Tris and Keth back to Dawnspeaker's home.
Later, Demakos Nomasdina visits the home of Dawnspeaker to ask her if she would accompany him to the Keepers—to request that the district of Khapik be closed so that they may catch the Ghost. She rebukes him when he speaks of letting him inspect the dead bodies before priests may cleanse them, calling his words blasphemy—although Niko agrees with Nomasdina. This is also when we hear a bit more about the Kurchal Empire. There was quite a lot of bloodshed, with executions and fights to the death with gladiators. She says that when the empire fell, the city of Tharios was besieged with the blood plague, with blood pouring out of bodies and leaving the corpses to rot. She says that death ruins all in its path, and that she refuses to dirty herself by association with Dema, and that he should be ashamed, as he is a Tharian citizen and knows of the danger. She leaves them both.
She is tall with chestnut brown skin and blue-grey eyes. Her wide mouth is smoothly curved, and she sports a slender nose with broad nostrils. Her dark hair is greying, and is usually worn bound with ribbons and covered by a sheer blue veil.
Personality & Traits
As a powerful mage politically, Dawnspeaker is a proud woman, who wears power very well. She is loyal to her city, and believes in the magical taint that death leaves. She was quick to rebuke Demakos Nomasdina for wishing to leave the murder sites uncleansed. She is just, however.
Jumshida only appears in Shatterglass.
