Kolborn Bancanor (pronounced KOLE-born BAN-kan-ohr), or Kol, is a member of a wealthy goldsmithing and banking family based in Kugisko, Namorn. He and his wife Matazidah have four children: Jorality, Niamara, Peigine, and Eidart.

Biography

Early life

As a member of House Bancanor, Kol was raised in luxury and wealth. His mother was described as a draconian matriarch who ruled the family with an iron fist.

Study abroad

Kol studied away from Namorn while he was a journeyman. He traveled to Bihan with Dedicate Frostpine, a famed smith-mage. There they met Matazi, a Bihanese seamstress who was incredibly beautiful. Frostpine began a sexual relationship with her. Dedicate Frostpine was the one who told her that they should end the relationship, and she was angry at first. She then began one with Kol. Frostpine was not angry and was happy for his two friends. He even suggested that they would be good together if they did begin one.

Kol did not tell Matazi about his wealth in Namorn, and that he was the heir to the entire Bancanor fortune. In fact, while abroad, he was a penny pincher, as his family ensured that he could provide for himself by not financially supporting him while he was away. When he returned to Kugisko with Matazi, that was the first his wife had learned of the kind of wealth that she had married into.

Head of a Guild, Fatherhood

Kol and Matazi had twin girls Nia and Jory first, then Peigi and Eidart. Kol had the older twins girls tested for magic quite a few times, since he knew magic ran in his family. As very few magic testers have the ability to find ambient magic, the twins' magic was not found in that way.

Kol and Matazi hosted Frostpine and his student Daja Kisubo at their home on Kadasep Island in Kugisko. They treated the two mages like they were family. After Daja found magic in Nia and Jory, Kol mentioned that it probably came from his side of the family. Since his kids were ambient mages, they were only discovered by means of a living metal mirror and Daja's ability to see all kinds of magic because of working with Niklaren Goldeye and Trisana Chandler. As mage students had to choose their own teachers, Kol and Matazi took it in stride, even though the parents of wealthy Namornese children usually chose the teachers. Kol figured it wouldn't be good to meddle in mage things, not being a mage himself, and to leave the mage stuff to the mages. This was met with disapproval by Morrachane Ladradun, Ben Ladradun's mother.

When Yorgiry's Hospital was destroyed by an arsonist and burned to the ground, he and his wife were at the forefront of the fundraising for a new hospital. They made donations from their own fortune that were so large they shamed every wealthy Kugiskan into giving more.

Physical description

Kol is a tall white man with broad shoulders. He has brown-blonde hair, sharp blue eyes and a lean face.

Personality and traits

Kol is very kind and welcoming. He is a jokester, but also very aware of the world. He and his wife are immensely philanthropic, and aid in all sorts of charitable ventures.

Appearances

Kol only appears in Cold Fire. The Bancanor family is mentioned in The Will of the Empress by Saghad Ambros, the steward of Landreg.
