Numair Salmalín (pronounced noo-MAYR sahl-mah-LEEN) was born in 424 HE as Arram Draper to Tyran merchants. He is one of the most powerful mages in the world and is the chief mage of Tortall. He studied at the University of Carthak with Ozorne Tasikhe. He is married to Veralidaine Sarrasri, a powerful wild mage, and they have two children together, Sarralyn and Rikash Salmalín.
Numair (then Arram) was born in Tyra to commoner parents who were cloth merchants. He displayed a powerful gift from an early age, accidentally setting numerous fires. By the time Arram turned six, his local teachers advised his parents that the only place that could teach him was the Imperial University of Carthak. His father, Yusaf Draper, took him to the University to take the entrance exams, and Arram became the youngest student there.

- July 11, 2009: Again Tamora Pierce made a new entry to her livejournal. In it she says that people are welcome to suggest which content they want to see in the companion book but that they should also check what others already suggested and just add their opinion there, when it fits. The livejournal entry can be found here.
- July 3, 2009: Tamora Pierce posted a new entry to her public livejournal. Among other things she mentioned that she is working hard on Mastiff and that plans for a Tortall companion are getting definite. She and some other people are going to start working on it this very year. The livejournal entry can be found here.
