Nawat (pronounced NAH-waht) was a former crow turned man whom Aly met during her stay at Tanair. As a man he worked as a fletcher and later joined the raka rebellion. As such he helped by enlisting the help of other crows, who fought with the raka as soldiers in human bodies under Nawat's command. Aly was his first friend among humans and they developed a love relationship and eventually married.

Personal History

Early life

Nawat was born as a crow on the Copper Isles around 459 or 460 HE. He was marked with magic by Ochobu Dodeka; revenge for dragging her clothes through the mud.

He met Aly when he was about 2–3 years old in 462 HE. In that time the crows made a bargain with the Trickster god for a necklace. The bargain was for Aly to keep the Balitang children alive by the end of summer, but the crows agreed to help, as it was part of their own bargain. He was one of the crows Kyprioth asked to teach Aly their language.

Nawat was very interested by her and seemed to develop friendly feelings towards the human quickly. He even defended her against the other crows, when they were criticizing Aly's slow progress. To be closer to Aly and learn more about her, he changed his form to a man. It has been hinted that Nawat may have fallen in love with Aly before becoming a man, thus explaining his willingness to help Aly and her "flock-mates". He stayed away for some days after becoming a man because he wasn't accustomed to the new body and needed time to practice being human.

Life as a man

He became a fletcher and made arrows in in Tanair. As a man he was very popular with the young women. Even Sarai voiced an interest in him. Nawat however didn't respond to her approaches and had eyes only for Aly.

Nawat also led the crows to rebel against the soldiers when the Balitangs returned to Rajmuat and the raka got down to business with their rebellion. Nawat was hurt by Aly not thinking him to be a real man, which caused Nawat to leave Rajmuat and fight as a real man among the raka for some time. He eventually married Aly and had three children with her, a boy, Junim, and two girls, Ulasu and Ochobai. Ochobai is considered very small. Nawat could sense something was different about her when she was born. When he discovered that she would be a dwarf, he had to fight the wishes of his old flock and his crow instincts that told him to cull his child. However, Nawat knew humans do not cull their children and that Aly would never forgive him. He had also grown to love his daughter's fierce fighting personality. This led him to tell Aly of their child's deformity but not to kill their daughter. In doing so he turned his back on the Rajmuat flock.

Physical description

Nawat has dark skin, with a lighter complexion than the raka. His eyes are brown, long-lashed, and deeply set on either side of a long and very thin nose. His cheekbones are sharp and his chin square with a hint of a point. His mouth is long and slender, the lower lip fuller than the upper. He has short black hair, and feather patterns under his skin when viewed through the Sight.

Personality and Traits

As a crow and during his first days as a human Nawat was very playful and his innocence bordered on that of a child. He also didn't know about human customs and thus often amused Aly with his views.

Later on he got to know more things about being a man. He learned how to be a soldier and followed Ulasim's command. He also felt deep love for Aly and was hurt by her refusal to move their relationship on, which caused Nawat to leave Rajmuat for some time and fight as a real man among the raka for some time.

Nawat is swift and graceful. He can run quickly and silently, and can catch arrows, spears and javelins in mid-air. Many times in Trickster's Choice he was seen eating bugs, but finally stops in the time between the first and second books. Nawat is especially skilled at fletching arrows, using griffin and Stormwing feathers, which can kill mages.
