Nilo Cooper is the youngest brother of Rebakah Cooper. He was born in 236 HE. His mother was Ilony Cooper, who died in 244 HE. Nothing is known of his father. His older sisters are Rebakah, Diona and Lorine Cooper. Nilo's older brother is Willes Cooper.
Nilo spent the first two years of his live living on Mutt Piddle Lane in the Cesspool, the poorest part of Corus. Thus he is the one in the family who was least influenced by it as he didn't live long there.
In 238 HE Lord Gershom took them in and now provides for the boys. Shortly after moving into Provost's House Nilo got lost there. Nilo is training to be a stableman as he loves being around and training horses.
By 249 HE Nilo works as a palace courier and thus knows the ways of royality better than his oldest sister Beka. After Beka's successful hunt of 249 HE, Lord Gershom procures a place as royal courier for Nilo.
Nilo looks a lot like his mother. He has the same brown curls and brown eyes she had. Nilo even inherited her dimples. At ten years of age, he is already nearly as big or perhaps even bigger than Beka with her five feet eight inches.
He appears both in Terrier and in Bloodhound as a minor character. In Terrier he features in one of Beka's visits to Provost's House, while he only appears in the end of Bloodhound. In Mastiff, Nilo is mentioned by Beka but doesn't make an appearance.
It might be possible that Tamora Pierce made a mistake in Mastiff. There she describes Nilo as being the palace rider. But in Terrier, Nilo was the stablelad and Willes (the older brother) the courier. Curiously their situation seems to have reversed in the last book.
