|Tortallan Universe character|
Roald I of Conté (pronounced ROH-ahld of kohn-TAY), called The Peace-Keeper, was King of Tortall during the early 400s HE. He married Lady Lianne of Naxen and had one son with her: Jonathan IV of Conté. He is a member of House Conté, the ruling family of Tortall. He died in 439 HE, passing his reign onto his son, Jonathan.
Roald of Conté was born in 385 HE. He married Lianne when he was 26 years old and their only child Jonathan was born five years later.
By the time Alanna of Trebond arrived at the royal palace to train as page Roald was already King. The Tusaine War took place under his reign as did Duke Roger's first regicide attempts. The revelation that a girl had undergone her training for knighthood disguised as a boy caused much mayhem at the court and Roald introduced the Page Examinations a year later in early 439 HE. In the following March his wife died. Roald committed suicide at the age of 54 three weeks later.
Personality and Traits
Roald isn't called "the Peace-Keeper" without reason. He is very intent on keeping the peace with his neighbouring countries and in the war with ne]</ref> h even gave his soldiers the order not to cross the amily== His son.
Roald is also very anxious for his family, worrying not only for his son when he falls fatally ill of the Sweating Sickness, but also for his wife, whose health is very feeble. When she dies in 439 HE, he commits suicide.
His son and heir is Jonathan IV of Conté, the current king. Roger of Conté is his nephew by an unknown sibling, Sir Gareth is his nephew by marriage, and Roald, Kalasin, Liam, Lianne, Jasson, and Vania are his grandchildren through Jonathan, and Thayet jian Wilima. He also has two great-grandchildrren: Lianokami, through Roald and the Yamani princess Shinkokami, and Binur Iliniat, through Kalasin, and Kaddar Iliniat. Roald never got to know his son's offspring, because he died before Jon even knew his future wife, Thayet jian Wilima.

- ↑ The Contés and the Naxens were very closely related.
- ↑ It was the tradition for kings to take their eldest sons and heirs as squires. This was ended when Jon was king.
