She was also a friend of Numair Salmalín's and they had an romantic relationship before Numair left Carthak, when he was still known under Arram Draper. She, too, studied at the Carthaki University. It seemed as though her feelings toward Numair didn't change much over the years as she still flirted with him when he came to Carthak again accompanying the Tortallan delegation to the peace negotiations. When Numair was supposedly executed by the Emperor, Daine accused Varice of having betrayed Numair, but she denied it, although she admitted that she might have betrayed Numair if he had confided in her. Still Numair's seeming death caused her grief; she tells Daine that she tried begging Ozorne to spare his life, as it sometimes worked, but he still refused.
In contrast to most other mages, Varice didn't want to become famous or do great things with her gift. She prefered doing pretty things with her magic and specialized in elaborate baking. She usually dressed well and used face paint as well as rich scents. She was a tall, slender blonde with a "richly curved" body.
She only appears in Emperor Mage. It is unknown what happened to her after her meeting with Daine.
