Verene, who is from Blue Harbor[1], begins her training as a member of the Provost's Guard of Corus the same year as Rebakah Cooper. She has her first day on duty as a Trainee Guard on April 1, 246 HE. Verene dies a month later, on April 30, 246 HE while doing her duty[2]. She and her training partners were attacked by two Barzun sailors and three of Flash District's criminals[3]. She is being buried after Rollo on the first of May in 246 HE[4] Her training partners were Otelia and Rollo[5].

She chose training as a Dog over going to sea as a profession because she gets seasick[6]. Verene doesn't lose her Blue Harbor accent when she comes to Corus. She seems to be quite a good singer and has "the prettiest voice in all the Provost's Guard"[7]. Verene's mother is a barmaid at Naxen's Fancy, thus she hears a lot of gossip which she passes along to her daughter. That's why Verene has always some new gossip, too.[8]

Verene is part of the group that meets regularly in Beka's room for breakfast and a good friend of Beka. It also seems as though she and Phelan Rapp had a sexual relationship[9].

Verene only appears in Terrier and dies in the middle of the novel.
